The Manuscript in the Drawer

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Twenty-Three Years Later

The original manuscript was written in four months then put away for twenty years. It's difficult to write about something as personal as a stroke when you're the observer/caregiver, nearly impossible when you're the victim. However, so many doctors, nurses, and physical therapists, asked me during my recovery if the care I was receiving was helping because their knowledge was from a book . . . mine from being "Trapped Within." They wanted to hear from the point of view of the patient.

Shortly before I was discharged from rehab, I had been offered an opportunity to serve as a volunteer Stroke Support Peer Visitor for a newly developed stroke support program in a local hospital. This program paired stroke survivors with those who were just beginning their recovery process. The goal was to help demystify the medical process, alleviate worrisome questions about the disease, and ultimately offer hope for a productive life after stroke without making false promises. It was such a rewarding experience that I stayed for six years.

The book, Trapped Within, focuses on the raw and intense point of view of the stroke survivor to protect the heart of the internal struggle that occurs when everything one knows is stolen in a matter of seconds. The healing chapters unfold in chronological progression with surprising results and the chosen style of writing was story form to entertain as well as inform.

The purpose of the Stroke Survivor posts in this blog are to offer insights, tips, humor, hope, and encouragement for the stroke survivor and those who love and tend to them. If you have any questions, or comments you'd like to share, please submit them to me at my eMaill address: I'm looking forward to meeting you.
